A unique interior vase from the Sargasso series, crafted in the intricate soda bubble technique, where swirling microbubbles are suspended in glass, creating the effect of dynamic underwater currents. This piece is a signed, handcrafted work by Kaj Franck, one of the most iconic Scandinavian designers of the 20th century.
The series takes its name from the Sargasso Sea in the Atlantic - a mysterious, shifting body of water, known for its elusive nature and glassy stillness.
1970s. Nuutajärvi Finland. Dimensions: Height is 16 cm, Diameter max is 14 cm. Condition: There are traces of boiled and burst bubbles on the surface of the vase, which is quite typical for this series of glassware. These characteristics do not affect the functionality of the piece and, to some extent, add to the charm of handmade art glass. Nevertheless, this feature has been taken into account in the pricing.
Why buy vintage glass by Kaj Franck?
Kaj Franck was a pioneer in elevating soda bubble glass to an art form. In 1954, his works in this technique were featured in the renowned "Design in Scandinavia" exhibition in the United States and Canada, as well as at the Milan Triennale - the most prestigious design platform of its time. In Milan, Franck received an award for his soda bubble creations.
Franck was a revolutionary figure in the world of art glass and tableware. In the early 1950s, he broke with decorative excess and turned toward pure forms, original colors, textures, and clarity of design.
He also reimagined how people use and buy household objects:
- He introduced the now-familiar idea of nesting kitchenware, designed to save space.
- He was among the first to suggest selling tableware not as fixed sets or services, but as individual pieces, tailored to the user's real needs.
