Kaj Franck Nuutajarvi, Kastanja bowl KF211 signed, Finland 1950s
Vintage miniature crystal bowl Kastanja (Finnish for Chestnut) by Kaj Franck. A name clearly echoed in its organic, rounded form and rich optical depth. Handmade and signed: K. Franck Nuutajärvi Notsjö - 54.
The bowl is crafted from thick, clear glass with a deep-purple on the inner surface of the top indentation, evoking the appearance of a chestnut’s smooth shell nested within its outer form. Its silhouette creates a play of light and shadow reminiscent of the natural dimples and curves found in actual chestnuts.
The polished glass surface gives the piece a mirror like finish, further enhancing the contrast between the transparent exterior and the dark interior.
Like much of Kaj Franck’s work, Kastanja embodies his philosophy of Democratic design - achieving elegance through restraint and timeless beauty through clarity of form.
Diameter is 5.5 cm. Excellent vintage condition.
Why buy Kaj Franck's design pieces?
He was a revolutionary in Art glass and tableware design.
In the early 1950s, Franck refused lush decorating of the items in favor of clean lines, shapes, interesting colors and textures, thus, becoming one of the founders of mid-20th century modernist design in the Nordics.
