Brutalist Bronze Pendant Karkku, Kalevala Finland 1950s
Brutalist Bronze Pendant Karkku, Kalevala Finland 1950s
Vintage bronze pendant Karkku made by Finnish jewelry brand Kalevala Koru. Its triangular form, adorned with sophysticated patterns and textures, evokes associations with ancient Nordic motifs, blending historical inspiration with a brutalist aesthetic.
The bronze has developed a noble patina over time, giving the pendant a greenish hue in certain areas, which adds depth and a sense of antiquity to its appearance. This patina not only highlights the craftsmanship but also enhances the pendant’s timeless and rugged charm. The design is marked by boldness and strength, reflecting the robust character often associated with brutalist art and architecture.
An exceptionally fluid and dynamic piece, this brooch carries the ancient power of a protective amulet. Dangling pendants were an authentic form of talismanic jewelry among Finnic peoples. They were crafted from silver, bronze, or copper. Traditionally, smaller pendants in the shape of paws were attached to the main piece with rings. As the wearer moved, the paws would sway, gently clinking against each other. It was believed that this metallic sound would ward off evil spirits.
Karkku is modeled after a pendant dating back to the 9th–10th centuries, discovered by archaeologists in Karkku, Central Finland. Produced in the 1950s. Dimensions: Pendant length: 8.5 cm, Chain length: 62 cm. Marked KK.
