Why buy vintage glass series Finlandia by Timo Sarpaneva?
Iconic Glass Series named Finlandia from 1960s. Created by the renowned European designer Timo Sarpaneva.
1. Sarpaneva developed his own unique technique for these pieces. Each item was handcrafted using wooden molds—split logs—that were burned by the molten glass with each casting. This process made every object unique.

At the Timo Sarpaneva heritage exhibition at the Helsinki Design Museum in 2018, the "Finland" vases and sculptures formed the most significant composition of all his works that the author of this text had seen firsthand.
Sarpaneva worked as a designer at the flagship Iittala glass factory. He was also renowned as a sculptor and industrial designer.
The designer created many different series of art glass and crystal pieces that have become global classics.
In 1956 and 1957, he won the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale and numerous other prestigious international design awards. He was honored with Finland’s highest award, the Order of Pro Finlandia. He was a professor and honorary professor at the Royal College of Art in London and the Aalto University School of Arts, Design, and Architecture in Helsinki.
Art glass remained the designer’s favorite material. Here’s what Sarpaneva told The New York Times in 1994: "Glass is always very mysterious. It is constantly changing. And this gives it its magic."
