Why buy vintage Harlekiini glass by Nanny Still?
One of the most iconic and renowned art glass series by designer Nanny Still is Harlekiini. A cult favorite worldwide, a must-have for collectors of modernist glass.
In the late 1950s, Nanny Still-McKinney created a series of art glassware in the colors of the Mediterranean, in a style reminiscent of Italian glass. To achieve this, Finnish designers traveled to the island of Capri in search of historical glass samples that captured the exact hue of the sea.
Entirely handmade Harlekiini blends Mediterranean elegance with the fluid, sculptural forms of Scandinavian modernism. Its stems are particularly unique - meant to be held and felt in the hand.
Nanny Still’s work is featured in the Design Museum in Helsinki, the Finnish Glass Museum, and many others. She was awarded Finland’s highest cultural honor, the Pro Finlandia medal, and received recognition at the Milan Triennale - the most prestigious design competition of its time.
During the 1950s to 1970s, Still was one of the leading designers at the Riihimäki art glass factory in Finland.
